Synopsis

Through the magic of desire, Sean discovers he can speak with Mari, a young dolphin mother, who takes him aboard her back for a day on the ocean. But just beyond the harbor jetty, Mari's pod is scattered by a tuna fleet, and Sean soon wonders if either he or the pod will survive to tell the tale. Searching for Mari's missing son, they confront the dangers of the sea - from lost drift nets to lightning storms - and readers learn how different life is for wild dolphins from those in captivity.

Review

Praise for Oscar the Herring Gull, previous title from Donovan and Spellman: 1- A good animal story filled with natural history facts animal behavior, field observation and human impact on ecology woven seamlessly inspiring children to want to learn more. Spellman s illustrations are accurate enough to be anatomically correct with enough whimsy to inspire imagination! -Wendy W. Lull, President, Seacoast Science Center. 2- An endearing and engaging story, sure to delight younger audiences with a true-to-life glimpse into the life of gulls. Educators should flock to this wonderful book! Mark Wiley, Assistant Director for Education, N.H. Sea Grant Program. "
