Engagements with the Thousand and One Nights, gender, narration, and Sir Richard Burton, as well as other writers’ takes on the story-cycle, Nights Reading muses upon the nature of narrative and Scheherazade as narrator. Drawing from the original story cycle's positing of Scheherazade as redeemer of not only herself and her sister virgins of the kingdom, but of just rule and King Shariyar’s humanity, the poems explore tropes of gender and of the seemingly powerless (women, slaves, blacks) to erode and challenge the status quo.

About the Author

Marthe Reed is the author of Pleth, a collaboration with j hastain, (em)bodied bliss, Gaze and Tender Box, A Wunderkammer, as well as six chapbooks. Her poetry has appeared in New American Writing, Golden Handcuffs Review, New Orleans Review, HOW2, MiPOesias, Fairy Tale Review, Exquisite Corpse, BlazeVOX, and The Offending Adam, among others. The former director of the Creative Writing Program the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, she now resides in Syracuse, NY, where she is Co-Publisher of Black Radish Books and Editor/Publisher of Nous-zot Press chapbooks.
