Synopsis

Nikola Tesla was a genius who revolutionized how the world looks at electricity. During college his professors explained that it was impossible to design an engine without commutators or brushes. Tesla was unconvinced that such was necessary or even particularly desirable. It was then that Tesla began his work on the rotating field motor that ultimately gave birth to the modern age. In May of 1888, Tesla delivered his lecture "A New System of Alternating Current Motors and Transformers" before The American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the world has never been the same.

About the Author

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist whose work helped shape the development of modern alternating current electrical power systems. Born in Smiljan, then part of the Austrian Empire, Tesla studied engineering and physics before working in telegraphy and electrical power in Europe. He immigrated to the United States in 1884, where he briefly worked for Thomas Edison before pursuing his own inventions and partnerships.Tesla's most important achievements include his work on alternating current motors, polyphase power systems, transformers, high-voltage experimentation, wireless energy concepts, radio-related technologies, and electrical illumination. His patents and demonstrations played a central role in the adoption of AC power, especially through his association with George Westinghouse and the eventual success of alternating current in large-scale power distribution. Tesla's work became closely connected with the "war of the currents," the development of hydroelectric power at Niagara Falls, and the broader transformation of electricity into a defining force of modern industry.Although Tesla became famous for both brilliant invention and dramatic public demonstrations, his later years were marked by financial difficulty, speculative projects, and increasing public mythmaking around his life and work. Today he remains one of the best-known figures in the history of science and technology, admired for his imagination, technical insight, and lasting influence on electrical engineering, power transmission, and the modern technological world.
