Synopsis

In a fast-paced true story that reads like a novel, The Black Dragon: Racial Profiling Exposed is a "passionate and much-needed account of the struggle to put an end to police profiling on the New Jersey Turnpike," according to Professor Frank Askin, Distinguished Professor of Law and Director Constitutional Litigation Clinic, Rutgers Law School/Newark. "From the case of the long-haired travelers in the '70s through legal efforts to halt racial profiling in the '90s and beyond, Joseph Collum has made a major contribution to the protection and advancement of civil rights in New Jersey and the country as a whole."

About the Author

Joseph Collum grew up in the tropical paradise of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has returned to those roots in his Max Brady Mysteries. Brady's Run, published in 2009, is a murder mystery set on the white sand beaches of Fort Lauderdale. Et Tu Brady, published in 2013, is the sequel to Brady's Run. His next novel, A Bullet for Brady, will be out in 2014. The Black Dragon: Racial Profiling Exposed, published in 2010, is the true story of the invention and fight to end the practice of racial profiling. Prior to becoming an author, Collum was an investigative reporter and recipient of more than 100 major journalism awards, including the DuPont-Columbia Award, five Investigative Reporters & Editors Awards, two George Polk Awards, two Sigma Delta Chi Distinguished Service Awards, American Bar Association Silver Gavel, National Headliner Award, Ohio State Award, and a dozen Emmy Awards. Collum was the first reporter in America to expose the widespread practice of racial profiling (the Oxford English Dictionary credits him with coining the term "racial profiling"). His final assignment was at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001 and the days immediately following the collapse of the World Trade Towers. His account of the tragedy is excerpted in the book Covering Catastrophe.
