These 18 short stories, published from 1954 to 1979, are spread across Appleby's long career with the London Metropolitan Police, where he started as an Inspector and ended as the Commissioner. Most of them run to three or four pages, and were meant to provide a quick, entertaining read for homebound commuters, or as a treat for a leisurely Sunday morning spent with the newspaper. Subjects: Appleby, John, Sir (Fictitious character) -- Fiction. Police -- England -- Fiction.
