GenXpat/'jenw''eks w' pat/ n. a member of Generation X, born between 1964 and 1981, who is also an expatriate or expat, that is, one who decides to live and pursue a career abroad. Caught up in fast-paced careers that increasingly involve travel and international relocation, many young people find themselves living and working abroad, often at the cost of meaningful relationships and a sense of connection. Margaret Malewski, a cross-cultural trainer and GenXpat, balances the successes and failures of a new generation of young, internationally and culturally mobile professionals. Based on her own experiences and that of her colleagues, she offers invaluable advice for a generation that embraces the opportunity and the challenges of overseas assignments. Aspiring GenXpats will learn how to: negotiate an expat contract; juggle work and moving logistics; deal with culture shock; build social networks abroad; enjoy dating across cultures; prepare a smooth re-entry back home.

Margaret Malewski started her intercultural experience at a very young age - growing up in a Polish household in the French-speaking section of Canada. She moved to post-Communist Poland for university studies and had her first taste of profound culture shock - "given my Polish roots and my fluent command of the language, I had not anticipated how different the cultural values could be". After graduation she she worked in France, the USA and the UK as an architect before joining the Marketing Department of Proctor & Gamble living first in Geneva and latterly in Israel. She is currently using her knowledge to develop expertise and resources for the new generation of GenXpats, including seminars on the personal aspects of relocation and on the cultural aspects of job applications/ recruiting, and a website/online forum for GenXpats. She is a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Planning and a member of Sietar BC. She is a regular contributor to expertexpat.com and expatica.com. GenXpat: The Young Professional's Guide to Making a Successful Life Abroad is the first guide written for the new generation of young, internationally and culturally mobile professionals. These young professionals from "Generation X" - the generation most broadly defined as between the ages of 24-39 - are growing in number and have their own unique set of challenges. Often single and in the earlier stages of their careers, GenXpats tend to go into their expat experience dramatically unprepared and underserved.
Wrapped up in fast-paced careers that increasingly involve travel and frequent international relocation, many young people find themselves bouncing from one exotic assignment to another at the cost of work/life balance, meaningful relationships and a sense of continuity or connection. Written by cross-cultural trainer Margaret Malewski, GenXpat is designed to help young professional achieve the personal fulfillment they need to succeed in their international careers:
* make an informed decision to move
* optimize an expat contract to ensure their personal needs are me
* deal with culture shock and cultural differences
* build social networks abroad
* manage the question of romatic relationships, be it dating across cultures, embarking on a long-distance relationship or moving with a partner
* prepare a smooth re-entry to the home country, workforce and culture
Full of real-life examples from graduates of major business schools who are now working for multinational companies, GenXpat explains what to expect when starting an expat adventure.
