Synopsis

Anna Mindess' groundbreaking book, Reading Between the Signs, transformed the way we look at Deaf culture. Her innovative use of intercultural communication theory to explain the differences between Deaf and hearing cultures provided a new perspective that educators and professionals in the field have embraced. Mindess now delivers this companion workbook that further empowers readers to successfully navigate the intersection between Deaf and hearing cultures. Closely following the principal themes detailed in her original text, Reading Between the Signs Workbook translates theory into practice with twenty-two engaging and thought-provoking activities. They challenge readers to expand their definition of culture, examine their own values and present opportunities to view events from other perspectives. With contributions from such intercultural giants as Edward T. Hall and Craig Storti, plus original activities by the author, this first-of-its-kind workbook gives special focus to areas with significant contrasts between Deaf and hearing American cultures, including sharing personal information, definitions of politeness, and direct versus indirect communication style. The culminating section allows interpreters to apply these cross-cultural skills in ways that will enhance the quality of their work.
