Ireland’s Easter Rising of 1916 was almost wholly restricted to Dublin. The insurrectionists numbered around 1500 men and 200 women. Most Dubliners were hostile to them and many encouraged the British. Militarily the insurrectionists never had a hope. Against them the British threw vastly superior numbers and firepower. Their revolution lasted just six days. Its leaders were promptly executed. But the Rising succeeded. How the revolutionaries failed - and yet won - is a conundrum celebrated this centenary year in Ireland and the Irish dystopia internationally. It is a story of one of history’s most heroic failures. Paul Taylor is the author of more than a dozen nonfiction books, mostly history based. He was a journalist, deputy editor of New Zealand&;s Sunday Times , and a correspondent for the London Daily Mail. He was also an international award-winning copywriter for Australia&;s biggest ad agency.
