This practical handbook explores sleep issues in children, how these can be caused by early trauma, and how to solve them. Sleep issues are common in babies and toddlers – but for fostered and adopted children, and those who may have experienced early trauma, these problems can last a lot longer or recur later on. For this group, everyday techniques to help sleep may not help, as they do not address the underlying issue – children’s traumatic early experiences. Grounded in Dan Hughes’ well known ‘Parenting with PACE’ model, the first half of the book examines how children’s difficult early experiences can affect their behaviour; the various causes; and how using therapeutic techniques along with practical changes can help solve the problem. In the second half, two families who have been affected by this issue explore what it is like to live with an affected child, and what solutions they found. This is a title in CoramBAAF's popular Parenting Matters series which explores a range of health needs and conditions commonly associated with looked after children. Presented in a straightforward and accessible style, each title in the series combines expert information and first-hand experiences in order to help readers gain knowledge, achieve understanding, and make informed decisions about caring for an affected child.
