“As the sun rose on the 25th of September in 1950 I became the proud tenant of Buckfield Farm, Leominster. My earlier years of being a farm worker and shepherd are recorded in Working with the Curlew. Those were the days before tractors, fertilisers and chemicals, but now farming was about to enter a period of fast progress – some of it too fast and in the wrong direction!” This is the story of a shepherd who was able to climb the “farming ladder” before it was destroyed by the advent of modern day agriculture. It was a tough journey but the rewards were wonderful. It required the help of many people, and the trust of many more. It shows the nature of farming folks and how they are a special breed.
