A Ticket to Ryde and Other Stories is a collection of four short tales set at various periods looking at different aspects of railways. In A Ticket to Ryde and Beyond, the Chairman of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway devises an ambitious plan to build a tunnel between the island and the English mainland, achieving a link with the rest of the network. The volunteers draw inspiration from the success of the Bluebell Railway s re-establishment of a mainline connection, but their own project will prove much more troublesome. A Tale of Two Reopenings features two parallel projects to reopen lines in the Peak District. The schemes proceed with highly contrasting fortunes, and one encounters so many problems that an emergency appeal needs to be made to continue further. The Jinxed Railway centres on the Allingford & Winterbury Junction Railway, a seaside branch line in the South West of England which experiences numerous misfortunes. Eventually, it s up to a small boy to save the troubled line from certain disaster. The Railway Enterprise involves a brave plan to resurrect the ill-fated Wrexham & Shropshire services in a different form. A businessman with a famous railway ancestor creates a new company and sets about attempting to succeed where his predecessors failed.
