In Railways and Frontiers, the author explores the ways in which Europe s rail networks have been affected by changes in the continent s internal frontiers. Through a series of fascinating case studies organised by country, the author examines the impact on European frontiers made by such historical events as the emergence of Germany and Italy in the 19th Century and two World Wars in the 20th. Illustrated with an array of maps, modern photographs and scenes from old postcards, Railways and Frontiers brings a previously unconsidered aspect of the history of railways in Europe to life in an imaginative way. Born and raised in England and Wales, a graduate of Cambridge University, a some time naval officer, and a retired international businessman, the author is widely travelled both in Europe and elsewhere. He has written previously on the history of Welsh railways and on the history of railway and tram preservation in Britain. He is Chairman of a charitable trust restoring an electric Pullman train, the Brighton Belle, and is past Chairman of the Transport Trust. His interest in the subject of railways and frontiers was prompted by a discussion on a journey by train through Slovakia where the railways had originally been built with a focus on Budapest. At that time Slovakia was part of Hungary. When it became part of an independent Czechoslovakia, the railways were pointing in the wrong direction. A similar situation arose in Alsace and Lorraine when they became part of Germany, and in Poland when it was created out of three empires. Other cases emerged as he delved further.
