Synopsis

Cook and Eat is a range of specially adapted cookery books, written by an occupational therapist. Occupational therapists are trained to analyse and adapt activity. The books can help people who find regular cookery books difficult to understand. The books were originally designed to help people with learning disabilities, but it has been found that other groups of people who have cognitive difficulties can also benefit, for example some mental health conditions, brain injury and early stages of dementia. The recipes are easy because there is: A photo list of food you need, a photo list of things from the kitchen you will need. Easy words, easy methods to follow and measures and timings for everything. Only one thing needs to be done at one time. Photographs and pictures help with food safety. The use of concrete language assists the user to be clear about what they need to do if they can read. Users who cannot read are able to follow the photographic instruction, making this accessible to a wide range of people. There is some requirement to use digital weighing scales in some baking recipes but mostly using measuring cups and spoons in other recipes makes measuring ingredients much easier. The use of a digital timer, helps the user know how long to do a particular task for, e.g how long to stir something for, assisting with difficulties with judgement skills. The books include instruction on how to use the books, and details of what equipment is recommended and why. For example, digital weighing scales and timers are much easier to read and interpret than equipment using a dial. The books give temperatures and timings for an electric cooker. If the person has a gas cooker, you can change the temperature and reduce the cooking time accordingly. The idea of just giving 1 cooker option reduces confusion and decision making demands. The books are designed to be user friendly, for example, spiral bound means the book stays open at the required page.
