About the Author

Chris Moon-Willems is an independent care consultant, who specialised in care of the elderly during her professional and post qualifying social work training. She worked with older people for more than thirty years in Social Services and the NHS. This involved working directly with people in a hospital for older people and in the community as well as managing care homes and being responsible for residential, day, home care and hospital discharge services.

Chris became one of the pioneers of personal budgets, and their influence on personalisation, at a national and local level in social care and the NHS. She also gained important insight into personalisation when her parents were among the first older people in the country to be given a personal budget using a direct payment to buy their own services.

Chris has been caring for her parents for the past five years. She arranged their care package and monitored and adjusted it as their health deteriorated and dependence increased. She presented her parents' story about their journey from traditional "off the shelf" services to highly personalised support, to inform and inspire other Social and NHS Services about personal budgets and direct payments for the elderly across the South East region. She appeared on Breakfast TV and was interviewed on the radio for the same purpose.

Chris has since created a dynamic business, also called Relative Matters, devoted to serving the needs of relatives caring for their elderly loved ones. What started out as a simple desire to share the story of her own journey with her elderly parents propelled her into writing this book and developing her new business.
