Synopsis
Written by a practising classroom teacher, and with an emphasis is on popular and accessible texts, this Teacher's Guide covers the spectrum of approaches to engaging with action/adventure films. Starting with a rethink of the traditional approach to teaching genre, the author explores: Action/adventure narrative; Formal conventions of the genre; Issues of representation; Institutional practices (with particular regard to franchises and synergy); Critical debates raised by the genre, especially to do with propaganda and censorship. The Second Edition of the Guide has a revised annotated filmography bringing it up-to-date with Avatar (2010) and a wholly new chapter that reflects upon the developments in the genre since the book was first published in 2003. The revisions to the Resources include updated and entirely new photocopiable materials that consider issues of parody, marketing and authorship around the likes of Avatar, Team America: World Police (2004) and The Dark Knight (2008).
