Review:

Compelling ... reminiscent of Sartre's Nausea and Camus' The Outsider” - Ulrich Baron, Die Zeit.

A novel of extraordinary power and moral beauty, executed with a poet's intricate artistry' Independent.

De Kat has written a startlingly good novel ... beneath his staccato, disengaged prose lurk so many layers of reflection and insight that it's hard to know how to start unraveling them' Gordon Darroch, Sunday Herald.

Man on the Move by Otto de Kat is one of those books of rare beauty that appear only once every few years' Gijsbert Kruithof, Haarlems Dagblad.

A melancholic masterpiece' Peter Henning, Basler Zeitung.

From the Back Cover:
In January 1935, Rob leaves Holland for Cape Town, a young man thirsting for adventure and wanting above all to leave his family's suffocating hold on him behind. After a brutal stint in the diamond mines, he sails to Java to join the Dutch forces in their last stand against the invading Japanese. Here he finds Guus, a fellow countryman and the best friend he will ever have. They are soon taken captive, and together suffer the appalling slavery of labouring on the Burma railway. When, later, their prison ship is torpedoes they have no choice but to leap into the sea, and Rob never sees his friend again. Wandering from Manila to Lourenco Marques and eventually back to Cape Town, Rob is pursued by memories of his family, finding only transient periods of happiness and peace before an inescapable restlessness sets him on the move again.
Elegant, painterly and poetic, Man on the Move is an unforgettable portrait of friendship, and the heartwrenching story of a journey away from family into lonely adulthood, through war and captivity.
