A book which looks at optimality from three key viewpoints: what, why and how. This third edition includes full notes and references to the latest research, questions to promote reflection, new sections (which were requested by midwives and lecturers) and many more stimulating and thought-provoking birth accounts to help practitioners consider optimality in all its various forms. The 'why' section explains nine good reasons for encouraging women to opt for 'optimal' and the 'how' section should help midwives, obstetricians and other maternity staff (e.g. doulas) explore the logistics of supporting women in this choice.

Sylvie Donna has been researching childbirth since she became pregnant with her first child. At that time she was finishing her Master's and her impulse on hearing about various obstetric practices was to check the research. This led her to explore ways of making her own birth as safe as possible and resulted in her experiencing three optimal births herself. (She now has three daughters.) After writing a book for pregnant women (Birth: Countdown to Optimal), Sylvie was encouraged to write a book for midwives and other healthcare professionals. She now continues to research birth and publish books by other authors (with Fresh Heart Publishing), but she also works full-time at Durham University as an MA lecturer and providing support for postgraduate students.
