Synopsis

If you're pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant soon, you may well benefit from finding out more about pregnancy and birth even if you've done it all before. This book provides information which is not readily available to pregnant women (even online) and outlines the steps you can take to ensure you get the safest possible birth. It will also help you learn from other people's experiences, find out about key research findings and also understand your rights. The book is called Birth: Countdown to Optimal because pregnancy is actually a bit like a countdown... and it should be, in fact, if we are to prepare ourselves adequately for a safe, happy labour and birth. (Note that 'preparing' is completely different from 'planning' - which is impossible, of course, given the unpredictable nature of labour and birth.) The 'optimal' part of the title is about taking decisions during pregnancy and labour which are best for you and your baby. Getting information which is normally difficult to find before you get too far along in your pregnancy will give you more power and choice. After all, you'll then have more understanding of key issues and will be able to participate in discussions and decision-making. This book will help you, not only by providing easy-to-read explanations and discussions from page to page, but also by providing quick-reference definitions in the Glossary. It will also point you to resources to check out issues or choices. More than anything else, though, this book will reassure you about labour and birth and give you the inspiration you need to get to the other side of it safely!

About the Author

Sylvie Donna has been researching childbirth since she became pregnant with her first child. At that time she was finishing her MA and her impulse on hearing about various routine tests and procedures in pregnancy and birth was to check the research. This led her to explore ways of making her own birth as safe as possible and resulted in her experiencing three optimal births herself. (She now has three daughters.) This book is now fully referenced (for those who want to check the research) but is as easy to read and as upbeat as the first edition. Sylvie now continues to research birth and publish books by other authors (with Fresh Heart Publishing), and keeps up-to-date with the world of midwifery and obstetrics not only by reading but also by attending conferences on birth around the world. She is also a full-time lecturer and teacher at Durham University.
