Values are a fundamental component of the provision, practice and delivery of health and social care. The development of personal and professional values is influenced by a number of factors and the values held by practitioners and their professional groups can lead to competing demands and duties that make decision-making complex. In this book, students will be encouraged to critically analyse their personal value base and those underpinning health and social care work. They will explore values in general and reflect on how these are articulated in Codes of Practice. The text will use activities and case studies to enable the reader to reflect on the relevance of values in care practice and to apply theory in their practice. The Health and Social Care Series This series of textbooks is aimed at students on Health and Social Care Foundation Degree programmes in FE and HE institutions. However, the books also provide short introductions to key topics for Common Foundation Programme modules and will be suitable for first-year undergraduate courses in a variety of Health and Social Care subject areas. Books in the series will also be useful for those returning to practice and for overseas nursing students. The series includes three types of textbook: Knowledge and Skills books; Theory and Practice books; Specialist books that cover specific professions, topics and issues. All titles in the series will address the common elements articulated in relevant sector skill frameworks, for example, Skills for Care, Skills for Health, the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework.

Values are a key feature of healthcare practice and should be instilled in every student and practitioner. This text aims to do this by encouraging students to reflect on their own values and the basis for these values, before considering these elements in relation to healthcare practice. The text is well written and conveys its message with clarity. The material covered is concerned with rights, autonomy, dignity, trust and accountability. There is a consistent style to the chapters and it is easy to follow the progression of arguments through the text, especially as theory is linked to practice. There are a variety of activities in the text to allow the reader to reflect and to reinforce learning. There is also a useful list of further reading at the end of each chapter. As this text is aimed at those on foundation programmes and others in the first year of their studies, I would recommend it for use with students at the start of their studies in professional health care, either at diploma or degree level. --(Nursing Standard, October 8, Vol 23 no 5, 2008.)
This truely is an excellent book for the audience. The authors' experience and skill in teaching professional values is clearly evident. There is a good mix of activities to support students' learning and, moreover, it is fully up-to-date and readable. --(Lecturer, London South Bank University)
