Through the Window by J. R. Ashley is a collection of private, thought-provoking poems, written for personal enjoyment and satisfaction that has now been refined to become an Ashley Anthology. The collection covers many different aspects of the human condition, dealing with relationships, aspirations and emotions, plus the enlivened diversity of commenting on the predicaments of sheep, the problems of DIY and what to do with old love letters. The themes of religion and nature are present throughout the poems, demonstrating Ashley s knowledge and passion for these two subjects. It is clear that his spirituality influences and inspires many of his poems. The poems vary as much in style as they do in content and Ashley uses a range of literary styles and devices to enhance and convey the meanings of his poems. These differing styles often reflect the themes of the poems; formal language representing the darker themes, whereas short, humorous verses offer comic relief. The great diversity of subject and range of literary styles provide a stimulating experience that will appeal to a wide audience and give enjoyment to many different readers. The author s ability to appeal to emotions and senses of the reader and to connect his subject matter to everyday life will spark a feeling of familiarity in the minds of all readers.

J R Ashley was born in Northwich, Cheshire and has always lived there. He was educated at the Sir John Deane s Grammar School and is a widower with one son and two grandchildren. Always showing an interest and talent for natural growing things, his first ambition was to work for a local nursery. As family finances did not allow for this, he joined the personnel department of a major industrial company, working upwards to a senior management position focusing on job assessment and career development. While in retirement he began gardening again, and has concomitantly pursued his love of writing. He has played with poetry for many years; in the main his jottings were private and for personal enjoyment and satisfaction although he has been published in pamphlets and magazines and in his early twenties he sold a story to a major publisher. His present collection has been accumulating and refined to a point where the poems have become an Ashley Anthology. J R Ashley s long-time membership of the Poetry Society has lapsed due to his encroaching blindness. He still manages to write, using BBC Radio 4 as his medium for keeping in touch with today s events, his verses being mainly reflective. Sharply observational, his outlook was probably shaped by his contracting polio as a child which led to his feeling of being apart from the rough and tumble of his active friends. Believing in simplicity and an economy of words, JR Ashley hates verbosity and complexity.
