Synopsis

Disability is a development issue. In every country in the world, people with disabilities have a higher rate of unemployment than non-disabled people. A staggering 90% of disabled people are unemployed in some African countries.

Yet disabled people have often been left out of programmes designed to meet the Millennium Development Goals. For instance, a third of the 72 million children out of school worldwide have disabilities, but disability was not mentioned when the MDGs were formulated in 2000. Only last September was disability officially acknowledged.

This blatant exclusion is the driving force behind Leonard Cheshire Disability's new book Poverty and Disability. The book's authors come from four continents and include disability activists, academics and development practitioners. Together they provide a unique overview of the current situation for disabled people in the global South and a roadmap for future development efforts, including:

* a critique of disability programmes within international development assistance
* discussions of mainstreaming, inclusion, social protection and universal design
* microfinance, waged employment, self-employment and self-help groups

Editors
* Tanya Barron is the International Director of Leonard Cheshire Disability and a Senior Associate Member of St. Antony's, Oxford. Formerly Chair of the UNICEF NGO Committee in Geneva for five years, Tanya serves on the boards of the Global Partnership for Disability and Development and the International Disability and Development Consortium.
* Jabulani Ncube has worked on disability and development issues in developing countries for 30 years. He holds a Masters from the University of East Anglia, UK, and has worked for Action on Disability and Development.
Contributors
* Javed Abidi is a disability rights activist who previously headed the Disability Unit at the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. He founded the Disability Rights Group in 1994, was instrumental in setting up the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People in 1996 and became its director in 1997.

* Rosangela Berman-Bieler, a Brazilian journalist, publisher and advocate, represented Latin American disability issues to the UN. She is founder of the Independent Living Movement in Brazil, a founding member and former president of the Brazilian Organization of Persons with Physical Disabilities, honorary president of the Center for Independent Living of Rio de Janeiro, founder director of the Inter-American Institute on Disability and was previously Rehabilitation International Deputy Vice President for Latin America.

* Peter Coleridge works with NGOs, the UN and as a freelance consultant on including disabled people in development programmes. He is the author of Disability, Liberation and Development.

* Maria Kett is Assistant Director of the Leonard Cheshire Disability and Inclusive Development Centre, based at University College London (UCL). Maria is chair of the International Disability and Development Consortium Task Group on Conflict and Emergencies and honorary lecturer at the Centre for International Health and Development, UCL.

* Enzo Martinelli is Funding Manager at Panos International. He has also worked as ACRA's Regional Manager, for PLAN International UK as Programme Funding Manager and as Leonard Cheshire Disability's International Resource Development Manager.

* Charlotte McClain-Nhlapo has worked on child protection for UNICEF, was a representative at the UN during the development of the UNCRPD, was appointed twice to the South African Human Rights Commission and currently works at the World Bank as Senior Operations Specialist.* Daniel Mont is a senior economist with the Disability and Development Team of The World Bank. Previously, Daniel worked with the US Congress and as an assistant professor in the Policy Analysis and Management Department at Cornell University.

* Beverly Moodie is a social entrepreneur (Ashoka Fellow), personal and business development consultant, facilitator and author, who since 1991 has helped thousands of people start their own successful enterprises.

* Bob Ransom is Executive Director of the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development. Bob served the International Labour Organization for 20 years and has served as director of both African Programmes and International Programmes for Goodwill Industries of America.

* Roger C. Riddell has worked with governments, the private sector, NGOs, bilateral and multi-lateral organisations in development for more than 30 years, including 15 years as a research fellow at the Overseas Development Institute in London and five years as International Director of Christian Aid. Roger is the author two previous books, including Foreign Aid Reconsidered.

* Balakrishna Venkatesh is a consultant and trainer in disability and development issues worldwide who established Action on Disability and Development India in 1989. Balakrishna is currently promoting the implementation of the UNCRPD at the village level.
