The College of Occupational Therapists is a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT) and operates as a registered charity. "This Code of ethics and professional conduct describes a set of professional behaviours and values that the British Association of Occupational Therapists expects its members to abide by, and believes all occupational therapy personnel should follow. Occupational therapists must demonstrate behaviours that promote and protect the wellbeing of service users and their carers, the wider public, and the reputation of employers and the profession. To be deemed as ‘competent’ occupational therapists need a combination of knowledge, skills and behaviours. They may learn knowledge and skills through professional training and/or experience and continuing professional development, but these elements alone are not necessarily what make a good or safe practitioner.

Reviewed every five years, the Code is an essential, practical and user-friendly guide for all members of the occupational therapy profession. Equally, it provides a useful resource for members of the public, employing organisations and other professions who need to be aware of the Code, its requirements and the expectations of the professional body in terms of ethics and professional conduct."
