Haunch of Venison, London. 2013. First Edition. Hardcover. No dust jacket as issued. White cloth backed color printed boards, silver lettering to spine. 86 pages. Jose Parla employed texture and surface to convey the emotion within this series of work. Surface and substrate materials are combined on the canvas to present his unique methods of highly visual communication. The rhythm of the calligraphy and tagging merges with street ephemera such as ripped posters and advertisements collected on his travels. Layer upon layer is added, and taken away or stripped down, to create these dialogues resembling the very streetscapes in which he searches for his inspiration and source materials. Contemporary London Gallery Haunch of Venison served as the home for the artist’s exhibition Broken Language. Known for his vibrant works that explore the multilayered histories of cities and urban environments, his paintings and site-specific installations have been hits internationally – with major shows in London, New York, Paris and Havana. In speaking about his latest show, Parla commented, “For most of my life I have experienced being in transition and migration. This feeling allows me to bring the broken languages of the global community and its conditions into the gallery. My work is an empire of fragmented cacophonies, observed performances, palimpsestic musical gestures, and topographical compositions governing the essence of the cities I’ve traveled through.” Broken Language ran from February 8, 2013 and through March 28, 2013.
