This manual is for professional training and academic teaching in the social work and healthcare professions. The book includes 36 exercises, case studies, and suggestions for further learning. It will stimulate debate and understanding, with discussions on: how values - sometimes personal, sometimes shared - are central to our lives, and the people we work with --- how these values help us make sense of our experiences and create meaning in our lives --- how to understand the value of spirituality, religion, and culture --- how the power that other people have over us can sometimes undermine our values and meaning making, and make us feel we have little or no control over our lives --- how the 'helping professions' can work in an empowering way with people who feel demoralized, helpless, and oppressed when struggling with their own values and sense of meaning.
