Ceramic Materials: Processes, Properties, and Applications - Hardcover

9781905209231: Ceramic Materials: Processes, Properties, and Applications

Synopsis

This book is primarily an introduction to the vast family ofceramic materials. The first part is devoted to the basics ofceramics and processes: raw materials, powders synthesis, shapingand sintering. It discusses traditional ceramics as well as technical ceramics both oxide and non–oxide which have multiple developments.
The second part focuses on properties and applications, anddiscusses both structural and functional ceramics, includingbioceramics. The fields of abrasion, cutting and tribologyillustrate the importance of mechanical properties. It also dealswith the questions/answers of a ceramicist regarding electronucleartechnology. As chemistry is an essential discipline forceramicists, the book shows, in particular, what soft chemistry cancontribute as a result of sol–gel methods.

About the Author

Philippe Boch was Professor of Materials Science andEngineering at the University Pierre & Marie Curie, Paris,France and at the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et ChimieIndustrielles, where he was also Director of Doctoral Studies inMaterials Science. His scientific activities broadly concernedmaterials, ranging from physical metallurgy to non–destructiveultrasonic techniques and ceramic processes, with a recent shift tobioceramics and cementitious materials. His contributions appear inmore than 200 scientific papers, and were recognized by severalprestigious awards, among which the Stuijts award of the EuropeanCeramic Society and the Chaudron medal of the French Society ofMetallurgy and Materials. He was also a Distinguished Life memberof the American Ceramic Society, and a member of the World Academyof Ceramics.

Jean–Claude Niepce is a Professor of Materials Scienceand Engineering at the University of Bourgogne in Dijon, France. His main research interest is the production of nanopowders andnanoceramics in the field of linear and nonlinear dielectricmaterials. He is secretary of the French Ceramics Group and memberof the European Ceramic Society.
