Edwin Morgan (1920-2010) was Scotlands best-loved poet since Robert Burns, and its first official Makar of modern times. Written with his full cooperation, this biography reveals for the first time his multiple identities as an academic, cultural activist, radical writer, international traveller and gay man. Exploring hitherto unknown archive sources and unpublished letters, poems and plays, it recounts his brilliant and sometimes troubled career, and movingly celebrates his astonishing creativity in the face of the last dragon, cancer.

Review:

The biography sheds light on the exemplary application that sustained an almost constant stream of production in poetry, translation, criticism and (latterly) drama over eight decades from the 1930s to the 2000s. It makes it clear that Morgan was not - like, say, Donald Davie - an academic who happened to be a poet, but rather a poet who made his living as an academic. --Patrick Crotty, Times Literary Supplement

About the Author:

James McGonigal was until recently a lecturer in English at the University of Glasgow. He has for many years been a close friend and confident of the poet, as well as being an accomplished poet himself. Edwin Morgan is cooperating closely with the author in the preparation of this book.
