On Friday 8 May 1970, Edinburgh gallery director Richard Demarco and his assistant Sally Holman took Joseph Beuys on a drive through the Highlands, which proved to be an inspiring first experience of Scotland for Beuys. The entire journey was recorded on film by Demarco, and the first half of this book presents thirteen photographs of Beuys and Holman at various lookout points. The contemporary artists Alexander and Susan Maris annotated the photographs with poetic narration and then proceeded to re-create the tour and photograph it, empty of participants. An essay by Nina Gilmartin addresses the motivation behind this compelling ritualistic tribute.
