Synopsis

How to obtain your radio license and operate a VHF radio set on your yacht or motorboat.

This book explains how to use a VHF radio on your boat. It covers licensing the boat and the operator, then takes you through each type of call, and its ‘standard procedure’. You can also call using Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and the book has photo sequences of how to do this. Probably the most important section is sending a Mayday– the nautical call for help.

This 2nd edition contains all relevant updates including; changes to Calling for Medical Advice and to the way Coastguards listen on Channel 16.

From the Back Cover

A VHS set is in constant use on any boat. You can call other craft, marinas and the Coastguard. You cal listen to information broadcasts, gale warnings, and even get advice from a doctor. A very useful bit of kit.

But VHF just got better. Connect the set to a DSC Controller and your GPS, and you can send a distress massage automatically at the touch of the red button. The signal contains your identity and position, and is repeated every four minutes. You are now using Digital Selective Calling, which is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, and stand an excellent chance of being rescued.

This book is written with a light touch and is clear and easy to understand. It is beautifully illustrated in colours and features computer simulations of DSC procedures. Use it to pass the exam, then keep it on board for reference. When you need to make a call, the facts will be at your fingertips.
