Festivals are a popular aspect of primary RE. We enjoy them because they have good stories and lots of colourful activities children can get involved in. But they are much more than this. They provide a wonderful 'window' into the beliefs, values, hopes and commitments of faith communities. As such, it is essential that we give children the means and opportunity to explore these aspects. If we only touch on the externals - the foods, the traditions and the stories - without getting inside the real meaning and purpose of the festival, we fall into the trap of letting the means become the end. Let's get festivals-based RE teaching beyond 'retelling the story' and look for some reasons why festivals work, matter and are the favourite bit of faith in many traditions.
