With a Foreword by Sir Thomas Allen. This book is written for students of singing. Whilst primarily designed for undergraduate and graduate level students, it will also be of use to mature singers and to those already in the singing profession, who simply want to keep their technique and knowledge alive. Over a successful career as a singing teacher for more than a quarter of a century, Colin Baldy has been frustrated by the lack of suitable reading materials aimed specifically at the student of the singing voice. He hopes that this book will be a useful resource, not only to students, but also to their teachers who undoubtedly receive frequent requests for such a book. The book includes a certain amount of physiology, enough but not too much, with suggested exercises and methods for developing the correct use of that physiology. It suggests a suitable repertoire to run alongside the exercises, and contains a large amount of trouble-shooting advice. The author s intention is to encourage the singing student and to assist them in avoiding common pitfalls. It is also hoped that the book may help singers to identify vocal problems which they may already have developed.

Review:

Baldy s writing style is instantly warm; initial impressions of this book are akin to working with a familiar mentor in a lesson or masterclass situation. This approachable writing style enables the reader to absorb the ideas and techniques that Baldy so clearly advocates... Vocal research is an ever increasing and often confusing field. This volume stands out from the wealth of available material for its ease of reading and strong introduction to vocal physiology... --The Singer

Colin Baldy has been clear and concise and throughout he speaks directly to the reader and provides examples wherever he can. As an introduction, The Student Voice has some useful information and provocative points for further discussion and research particularly for the enquiring student. The section, Repertoire with Purpose, could be useful to novice teachers and, again, thought provoking for the more experienced. --Newsletter of the British Voice Association

Singers at all levels of proficiency will find The Student Voice useful. The book contains an overview of the voice, how it works, how to keep it healthy, and advice on singing optimally. The premise that production is based upon the response to text will instruct neophytes and remind experienced singers that singing is both emotional and physical. Baldy is unflaggingly realistic, yet unfailing optimistic. The latter is apparent from the first sentence of the book: Singing is easy, the author proclaims, and in an orderly fashion, Baldy provides the means to make it so. Students will find this book encouraging, engaging, and enlightening. --Journal of Singing

About the Author:

A previous book, Voice for Life 5 was published by the Royal School of Church Music in 2002. Colin is a character baritone and an exponent of the songs of Noel Coward.
