Douglas Vernon is uniquely well placed to write this story having lived in Shotley Bridge for almost 50 years. He ended his steel industry career as Manager, Production Services, shortly before Consett Works closed in 1980. A member of many local organisations, including the Shotley Bridge Village Trust, he was awarded the MBE in 2000 for services to the community in Consett
