Earned Value Management is a project control process, based on a structured approach to planning, cost collection and performance measurement. It is also one of a number of elements in a cohesive body of knowledge that constitutes project management as we know it today. The first edition of this guideline, published in 2002, was well received and found support in the United States and further afield as a standard and a work of reference for practitioners. This revision has corrected any errors in the original and aimed to improve its clarity without making any radical changes. It remains reciprocal with ANSI/EIA-748-B Earned Value Management Systems standard.
