Before Mrs Beeton there was Eliza Acton and before her Mrs Rundell. Her cookery book, which was an enormous bestseller for the publishing house John Murray for the first fifty years of the C19th, was first published in 1806 and in many subsequent editions - Persephone Books publishes a facsimile of the 1816 edition. Mrs Rundell's cookery book has never been reprinted before. Janet Morgan, the biographer, observes in her preface that 'home favourites were included, techniques and tools described and the physics and chemistry of food explained. The writer's tastes were wide-ranging. French and other Continental dishes were presented and Domestic Cookery had a paragraph comparing American and English flour.
