Naturally the newcomer to fishkeeping will be excited and anxious to get going with his first tank of fishes. He may be bewildered by the choice available and, again, because of his newness to the hobby, may well start off by choosing unwisely. The attraction of keeping tropical fishes is that so many different species are available from all parts of the tropical fresh waters of the world, including a few species from slightly cooler waters that nevertheless can be included with their warmer-water relatives. At the beginning of the fishkeeping interest, the newcomer will have no idea how one group of fishes can differ from another, or whether they will be compatible in the confines of the aquarium; and there is no opportunity for any fish to swim away from trouble. The beginning aquarist tends to choose a 'bit of everything' with which to stock the first aquarium; only later, with acquired knowledge, does he start to specialize. The first collection of fishes is generally described as 'community' although there is no reason at all why a collection of differing species should automatically get on well together just because a fishkeeper has chosen them as his first pets in the newly furnished aquarium. Within the pages of this book, the phrase 'community fishes' will be used to describe those fishes that will all tolerate similar aquarium conditions such as water temperature and food, and have either a peaceable disposition or a healthy disregard of each other - no one has yet discovered which of these conditions is true.
