Chris Howkins is an independent researcher and writer, specialising in British ethnobotany. He is interested particularly in the ways we have worked the land as a renewable resource, producing books on the social value of particular plants, occupations and habitats. This present book is the first to look so broadly at a whole social period, reflecting his life-long interest in archaeology that started with the Saxon period.
