Review

The central thesis of Louis Patler's new book Don't Compete...Tilt The Field is that the world of business is changing so fast that yesterday's tools for running businesses are no longer useful. To thrive in the global economy of the new millennium: "You have to think on your feet, stay on your toes and see in unconventional ways where the future is leading". To do this business leaders will need a whole new set of attitudes, outlooks and approaches which Patler designates "Thoughtware". This book aims to describe for CEOs and other managers the key elements of the new paradigms of business leadership. But this is no dreary academic exercise in futurology. Patler does away with academic and business-school speak in favour of a succession of homely homilies, jokes, anecdotes, true stories and morality tales. His sources are diverse, ranging from world-famous businessmen such as Ted Turner and business gurus like Peter Drucker to fortune cookies and quotes from Forrest Gump. And the book is superbly written. Subtitled "300 irreverent lessons for tomorrow's business leaders", it is broken down into moreish bite-sized chunks crammed with neologisms, aphorisms and Patlerisms like "service is as service does"; "lure luck out of hiding" and "failure is success in the making".

While this recipe goes down well in the U.S. (Patler's previous book If It Ain't Broke...Break It was a huge bestseller), his ebullient and eclectic style may prove too rich for more reserved British readers. It's a bit like having your very own ra-ra session--exhausting. So rather than sit down and devour the whole lot it in one go--which it would be quite easy to do--consume it slowly. It will certainly provide you with much food for thought. --Alex Benady
