Brazil is such a vast country that travelling in it can seem an impossible task. In fact, the secret of getting the most out of your Brazilian travels is to stick to a small area, and Rio, with its vibrancy and a backdrop of jungle-covered mountains, is as good a place to choose as any. Not without just cause, locals know it as "a cidade maravilhosa"--"the city of marvels".

This new Rio guide will be a great help in planning a stay, especially for people going for the carnival. The book is packed with advice on getting the most out of the festival, including sections on its history, carnival etiquette, and also a guide to some of the darker elements of Brazilian culture, such as "candomblé", the religion whose Gods are offshoots of African deities.

Then, if you feel the urge to explore a little beyond Rio, the guide is rounded off with a series of possible excursions in Rio State, including the old colonial town of Paraty and the hill station of Teresopolis. As useful for millionaires as for paupers, this book will be a great way in to Rio for any first-time visitor--the small type may irritate some, but it is a price worth paying for the insights and advice which are provided. --Toby Green
