Synopsis

The Anglo-American Joint Strike Fighter program promises to become the largest aerospace program in history. Aimed at reversing the upward spiralling cost of combat aircraft procurement, the program will see new generations of avionics and stealth technology applied to an aircraft with the export as well as domestic market in mind. The JSF program will also see a shift in the way aircraft are procured in this new century. For the first time the US is inviting prospective export customers to join the program at differing levels for a contribution to the program costs. The program is one of the most ambitious aerospace programs ever, attempting to produce variants of a common airframe for conventional land based operations, aircraft carrier operations and the most challenging of all the short take off and vertical landing operation. The X-32 and X-35 concept demonstrator aircraft which conducted their respective flight test programs during 2000/2001 were hailed as among the most successful flight test programs ever. Each design team claimed to have achieved the goals set out for the test program. The Joint Strike Fighter is set to replace no less than five different types of aircraft in five different services in two countries. In addition to the projected original 3000+ requirement for the US and UK, it is estimated that up to 3000 more fighters could be sold on the export market. This would make the JSF one of the most successful post war combat aircraft programs (in terms of numbers produced) in history. This volume will focus on the concept demonstrator aircraft and the team's preferred weapons system concept operational variants. The genesis of the program is also looked at in detail. The winning teams Lockheed Martin F-35 early development program is detailed as is the aircraft's projected export potential. A detailed yet highly readable account of the respective candidates to for the US/UK Joint Strike Fighter program and the winning F-35 design. The volume is extensively illustrated with hundreds of photographs, cutaway and 3-view general arrangement drawings.
