Billed as "an inspiring and accessible guide to using bulbs to transform your garden into a vibrant and colourful haven", this book won't be a disappointment, be it for short-term conspicuous splashes of colour or for less obvious, longer-term plantings. Author Richard Ross is an award-winning freelance journalist and writer who has written books and has contributed to several newspapers and magazines. It is arranged by season, and therefore enables the gardener to create year-round colour schemes with bulbs. In Spring, they are used either in small groups or large drifts, in beds, borders or naturalised areas. In Summer, either as striking specimens or part of mixed borders. In Autumn, they are used to prolong the summer flowering season, often with surprises, eg: autumn-flowering snowdrops and autumn "daffodils". In Winter, bulbs can create impact using colour when it is largely scarce. Each section concludes with an illustrated plant gallery highlighting the most colourful and easy-to-grow bulbs providing information on height, colour, spread and hardiness. The conclusion is an easy-to-follow chapter on the care and cultivation of bulbs. The book is beautifully and lavishly illustrated with visually stunning photographs by the renowned father and son Harpur team. Father Jerry is a leading award-winning garden photographer and he has contributed to many prestigious publications. Son Marcus was originally a publishing editor, and together they run the Harpur Garden Picture Library. All in all this is a wonderful book; an ideal guide for established and new gardeners alike.
