Review
The simple, uncluttered and enduring appeal of country homes has always been sought after by the suburban and city dweller. This enchanting book offers a wealth of ideas and inspirations that can be used almost anywhere to achieve the relaxed but ordered country look. Katrin Cargill describes some basic design schemes, starting with a chapter on the inspirational style of English, Shaker and Swedish cottages. She then illustrates how these styles have been successfully interpreted into the modern home. The following chapters deal with colour and surfaces, furnishings and living spaces. Details on tables, seating, beds and storage--with excellent accompanying photographs by Simon Upton--are both inspirational and full of visual information. Each section is summarised and practical information and helpful hints are given on how to create rooms with simple and elegant "elements of style". Special attention has been paid to the use of accessories, textiles and everyday objects in order to get the county feel with the use of uncomplicated and easy-to-replicate items.
