Synopsis

This is a unique book of literary and art-history criticism. From the sixteenth to at least the eighteenth century, poetry was the literary genre most widely used by viewers and artists alike to comment in writing on recent works of art. In exploring the topics addressed in individual poems and in studying the wider subject of the relationship between poetry and art, the essays in this volume suggest that poetry can record reactions to the visual arts in ways that are not documented in other kinds of commentary. The book contains seven papers which were delivered at a Leonardo da Vinci Society symposium and three more which were written specially for the book. The papers aim to document the great variety of subtle insights which poetry can give to art history. Poetry informed artistic practice, in particular portrait painting: books containing poems represented in portraits may comment on the respective painting or offer a key to its interpretation; numerous artists wrote poetry on a variety of subjects; some art theory was actually written in verse; a number of distinguished poets chose art works as their subject; lastly, men – and women – who were not artists or writers resorted to poetry more than to any other literary genre when wishing to express their views on works of painting or sculpture. Thus poetry functioned as one of the most illuminating gauges of contemporary attitudes towards the visual arts. The authors of the essays are: Giovanna Perini, Paul Holberton, Wolf-Dietrich Löhr, François Quiviger, Mary Rogers, Charles Ford, Henry Keazor, Tomaso Montanari, Thomas Frangenberg, Alison Yarrington and Nigel Wood.
