Synopsis

Toolbank is a wholesaler in hand and power tools with 11 branches supplying tools across the uk.

The Toolbank Historic Tools Collection book is an astonishing variety of tools which have been created by generations of toolmakers. The collection brings to life more than 300 tools, the majority over 100 years old.

The story of this magnificent collection starts when Wally Flude was discharged from the RAF after active service, he joined the timber trade with a timber importing business where he worked until his retirement in 1984.

His specialist knowledge of the trade comes from frequent visits to Sweden, Norway and Finland. Not only did he develop a knowledge of timber during his working life, but an expertise in how to work with it.

Wally is not only an enthusiastic collector, but a real craftsman with a superb amateur workshop from which he produces some exquisite work.

It was some time after Wally's retirement in 1984 that John Twallin a good friend of many years' standing and knowing of Wally's interest in tools and the collecting of old tools, suggested that he assemble a collection of principally British tools for Toolbank, Toolbank being the trading name of Curtis Holt Ltd., C A Clemson & Sons Ltd. and Finnie & Co. Ltd of which John Twallin is Chairman.

In time and under Wally's direction the Toolbank Museum came into being, and today is located at the Toolbank Head Office's in Dartford Kent.

The Toolbank Historic Tools Collection is a selection made by Wally in his capacity as curator of the Toolbank Museum and represents only a very small part of this ever growing collection.
