Review

A Century of Grand Prix Motor Racing is a superbly crafted book which guides the motorsport enthusiast through the many eventful miles that have so far been covered by the sport. Motor racing has seen numerous changes during its history, but Anthony Pritchard manages to interweave key dates and moments with meticulous detail as well as packing the pages with quotes and interviews from the time with the leading players.

The passion that Pritchard has for the now global sport enables him to scratch more than just the surface and gives the reader a powerful and educating insight. To accompany the text, photographs bring to life the incidents, dramas and controversies which accompany each decade. Pritchard takes the reader right back to the very birth of motor racing, long before the development and expansion of Formula One and introduces the pioneers who helped to shape the future.

The modern era has seen a rapid growth through the arrival of turbo-charged engines and then sponsorship, which has bank-rolled technology to the very limit, but Pritchard tackles the complexities of progress in an interesting and understandable approach. Not recommended for a Sunday driver, but for the F1 devotee this book qualifies for a place on the podium--or more likely your bookshelf!
