Neil Munro (1863-1930) was a native of Inveraray in Argyll but spent most of his working life as a journalist in Glasgow. He is best known for his humorous Para Handy Tales to the extent that his more important literary and historical works have been somewhat neglected. These literary works include some collections of marvellous short stories, and a number of historical novels, most of them with Highland themes.
In this, his first collection of short stories, mostly set in the seventeenth century, Neil Munro set out on what he called a 'new vein, rich and untried' of Scottish literature. Guided by his own love of Argyll and Gaelic tradition he was seeking to break away from the Kailyard school and present a realistic account of the Highlands and its people. To quote Ronnie Renton's introduction to this new edition of the stories Neil Munro's "... interesting experimentation with Gaelic-English constitutes a breakthrough in the representation of the Gael in non-Gaelic Scottish literature." In his attempt to move away from the sentimentality of earlier nineteenth-century Scottish writers Munro has given these stories a bitter irony while drawing the reader into the culture and traditions of the highlander. The smattering of Gaelic words and phrases throughout the stories whilst in no way impeding the reader's progress adds to this illusion. A much later story about the First World war has been added as an Appendix, to show how Munro was able to extend this genre to more modern times.
