About the Author

Dr. Simon M. Shane is an Emeritus Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, School of Veterinary Medicine, Louisiana State University where he was involved in teaching, research and service from 1979 through 2001. He currently holds an appointment as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Poultry Science, North Carolina State University. He obtained his veterinary degree from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 1964, and earned a Ph.D. in Poultry Nutrition from Cornell University in 1969. He subsequently earned a Masters Degree in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa in 1975, while serving as a Production Director for a large integrated broiler producer in the Republic of South Africa. He was awarded the Diploma of Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2001, is a 1991 Charter Diplomat of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians and the 2005 recipient of the AAAP Lasher-Botorff Award. Professor Shane is active in all aspects of US and international broiler and egg production with special emphasis on bio security, economics and food safety, having consulted extensively in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
