Synopsis

As much as 75 percent of a manager's day is spent in conversation. Much practised but imperfectly understood, Professor Dixon's book looks at the nature of talk and how it can be developed to form 'dialogue'. To manage change, complexity and diversity, organizations and individuals must develop. Individual learning has profound limitations. 'Doing dialogue' or 'development talk' in teams and groups is increasingly being seen as a new essential tool in managing change.

Dialogue at Work gives you:

* An understanding of the relationship between talk and development in organizations, how dialogue differs from the skilled talk that goes on all the time

* Skills to recognise talk that hinders learning and development and means of rectifying this on an individual and group basis

* Practical ideas to develop forums and conditions for dialogue based on research with leading companies

* Summaries of leading theories on the nature and function of dialogue (Argyris, Bohm, Johnson and Johnson, Mezirow, Freire)

(Forms part of The Mike Pedler Library, which currently features ABC of Action Learning by Reg Revans, A Concise Guide to the Learning Organization by Mike Pedler and Kath Aspinwall, Resolving Conflicts in Organizations by Rennie Fritchie and Malcolm Leary. New titles to follow soon.)
