Synopsis

This volume is from INTRAC's 10th Anniversary Conference, December 2001, the aim of which was to "Critically review the use and operationalisation of the concept of civil society and its strengthening in the practice of the international development system". It draws together the different theoretical approaches underpinning civil society strengthening programmes, the nature of the state and its relations with civil society as well as the role of capacity building in the context of civil society strengthening. Given the wide range of programmes INTRAC has provided, a further chapter discusses the strategies and methodologies of operationalising civil society support programmes, in this case based on our own experiences specifically in Central Asia. Finally the book challenges the monitoring and evaluation of civil society: are programmes being evaluated, what have we learnt and what mechanisms can we use to improve our learning? Further chapters focus on the policies and experiences of different types of agencies with an emphasis on different donor groups, official, NGO and Foundations complimented by regional approaches to civil society.
