This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar 'Anaerobic fungi and their role in the nutrition of extensively fed ruminants' held in Dalfsen, the Netherlands, under the auspices of the Commission of European Communities programme on Agriculture. The anaerobic fungi are recently discovered micro-organisms from functional ruminants and other herbivores. Producers of exceptionally active fibre-degrading enzymes, they also possess hydrogenosomes, specialised organelles in which hydrogen is formed. These fungi provide unique opportunities for the manipulation of rumen function and for the biotechnological exploitation of wastes, crops and residues as well as fascinating insights into evolution. Here, the molecular biology, enzymology and ecology of the anaerobic fungi are considered in the context of the availability of plant resources, recent advances in rumen microbiology and the biology of other micro-organisms.
