Since its publication in 1980 Oliver Rackham’ book, described by D L Wigston as "this monumental text," has been the definitive work on the subject and an essential tool for the historical ecologist.
The first edition has proved to be a major contribution to British vegetation ecology. It has been obligatory reading for scientists working on any aspect (ecological, botanical, zoological, pedological, geographical, etc.) of the woodland types described in the book. Of equal importance was the way it illuminated for historical geographers the extent and nature of woodlands in medieval and Tudor England, and the groundbreaking work on the economic and social history of woods, viewed by Wigston as "unique in style and subject matter."
Castlepoint Press is delighted to announce a new, extended edition, bringing to fruition nearly 23 years of additional research by Oliver Rackham. The result is 9 new chapters, an updated and extended bibliography, while over 240 colour photographs, and more than 80 new diagrams and charts enhance the original, pioneering text.
The first edition’s 24 chapters have been reproduced in situ page for page, although the typeface has changed and small typographical errors corrected, original diagrams, maps and tables have been rendered more clearly. Most of the original black and white photographs are now in colour and 14 pages of new colour illustrations have been inserted. Almost all original chapters also have an additional colour photograph and some explanatory text added to their final page. The 9 new chapters contain over 135 new colour illustrations. The expanded Index merges these new chapters and the bibliography has been augmented to include recent work.
The new chapters comprise :-
25. Woodland Vegetation: Stability or Change?
26. On Coppicing Plants.
27. Elmwoods: What has become of them?
28. Trees and Ancient Buildings.
29. Windblow and the Great Storms.
30. Species and Area: are small woods impoverished?
31 Types of Ancient Woodland: can any advance be made?
32. Wildwood and the Origins of Woodland, Wood-Pasture, and Savanna.
33. Conservation and the Future.
