Synopsis

When William Dudley enlists as a private in the Royal Hampshire Fusiliers, he discovers that life in the army of Queen Victoria is not the romantic adventure he had expected. Transported to the Crimean Peninsula, his dreams of glory are confronted by the harsh reality of war and death. Promoted to sergeant on the battlefield barely more than a year after his enlistment, Dudley must learn to command and inspire the soldiers he is called on to lead, and do so in the face of death and destruction beyond anything he had ever imagined.

About the Author

At the tender age of five, Harold R. Thompson was inspired by a primer and wrote his first two works. He completed his first novel seven years later, and has been writing ever since. While attending university, he spent his summers working at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, a Victorian-era fort in his native Halifax, Nova Scotia. There, he was a member of the 78th Highlanders, an historical re-enactment of the fort's British Army garrison. The job reminded him of his love of history, particularly military history, and he started writing again. After two years of law school, he realized that the lawyer's life was not for him, that he loved storytelling above all else, and so he quit to write. The original edition of Dudley’s Fusiliers was published in 1996. He is now a fulltime employee of the Halifax Citadel Regimental Association, a contractor with the Canadian government. He designs and supervises public programming for visitors to the site, which he sees as another form of storytelling. He has also indulged a love of film-making and has shot a few documentaries about the Citadel, including a staff recruiting video. “I plan to pursue more film work, but there isn't really enough time in the day. I have a wife and two children aged six and three (as of this writing, but they keep growing), and what with spending most of my non-work waking hours with them, writing has become a midnight pursuit. But I keep up the chase.”
